In Memoriam: Paulist Fr. Joseph Mahon (1929 – 2019)

July 21, 2019

With sadness, we announce that our brother, Paulist Fr. Joseph Mahon, entered eternal life on Saturday, July 20, in New York City. He was 90.

A Philadelphia native, he was born January 10, 1929.

He entered our novitiate in 1949 and made his first promise on September 8, 1950.

He was ordained a priest on May 3, 1956, one of 17 men ordained that day at the Church of St. Paul The Apostle in New York City by Cardinal Francis Spellman. It was the largest ordination class thus far in our community’s history.

Fr. Mahon spent nearly his entire priesthood as part of our mission band, leading parish missions and retreats.

“He was real model for me as a Paulist missionary preacher,” said Paulist Fr. Bruce Nieli, also a full-time missionary. “May dear Joe rest in the arms of Jesus!”

Fr. Mahon’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2019, at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York City. A viewing will be held prior to the Mass in the Church beginning at 9 a.m.

Burial will follow the Funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery in Oak Ridge, NJ.
