In Memoriam: Anna “Patty” Duke

We were saddened to learn of the death on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, of award-winning actress Anna Marie “Patty” Duke at the age of 69. We extend our condolences and prayers to her family and all those who loved her.

Anna appeared in six episodes of Paulist Productions’ landmark television anthology series “Insight” (which aired in national syndication from 1960 to 1983). The episodes were:

  • “The One-Armed Man” (1974)
  • “For the Love of Annie” (1976)
  • “A Slight Drinking Problem” (1977)
  • “Second Chorus” (1978)
  • “God’s Guerillas” (1981)
  • “The Hit Man” (1983)

Anna received a Daytime Emmy nomination for her performance in “The Hit Man.” She also received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her performance in Paulist Productions’ 1981 TV drama “Girl on the Edge of Town.”

The photo above shows Anna with Paulist Fr. Ellwood “Bud” Kieser (1929 – 2000), founder of Paulist Productions and producer and host of “Insight.”

In a Los Angeles Times article in October, 2000, Anna spoke about meeting Fr. Kieser:

” … Patty Duke — who would later turn to Kieser for private counseling before she was diagnosed with manic depression — recalls Kieser showing up at her doorstep with an ‘Insight’ script when he couldn’t get her on the phone. ‘At the time I was not a practicing Catholic, and yet the child Catholic in me was cowed. Here’s a priest at my doorstep. And he happens to be 8-foot-3.’ She called him Bud; he called her Anna Marie. … “
