On Tuesday, the cause for the beatification and canonization of Servant of God Dorothy Day (1897-1980) moved into a new phase.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York opened the canonical inquiry on the life of the Catholic Worker movement founder, gathering evidence to determine if Dorothy lived a life of “heroic virtue” in the eyes of the Church. This phase will include interviewing people who knew Dorothy personally.

Paulist Fr. Joseph McSorley (1874-1963), pictured, was Dorothy’s “first spiritual adviser” (her term) from 1932 until around 1940 and was an “approved adviser” in the early days of the Catholic Worker newspaper.  In fact, in 1933, Paulist Press printed 2,500 copies of the first issue of the Catholic Worker (at a cost of $57).

In 1996, Paulist Productions released the film “Entertaining Angels: The Dorothy Day Story” starring Moira Kelly and Martin Sheen and written by John Wells. The accompanying video shows the trailer for that film. To watch it online or purchase a copy, please visit amazon.com:
