June 23-27 A Retreat with Fr. James Alison
The Victim Speaks: Reading Scripture with the help of René Girard
René Girard is a leading French cultural thinker and theoretician of desire. His thought, sometimes described as “mimetic theory” has become increasingly influential in theological circles, above all because of the freshness of the readings of Scripture which his approach opens up. James Alison is one of the people who has sought to flesh out the theological implications of Girard’s thought to help make the Gospel more available in contemporary circumstances. During the course of retreat, James proposes a journey through some texts of the scriptures, illuminated by the thought of René Girard, which will give us an approach that is both very modern, and yet very pre-modern, to Luke’s testimony: “He opened to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24, 27b).
In addition to the Scripture sessions, there will be more informal sessions of sharing where participants will be able to flesh out applications for ourselves.
No previous knowledge of the thought of Girard will be expected, though anyone who wishes to prepare themselves for the retreat will find that time spent with Michael Kirwan’s Discovering Girard (London: DLT/Cambridge: Cowley Publications) is not time wasted.
James Alison is a Catholic theologian, priest and author. He has studied, lived and worked in Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the United States as well as his native England. He earned his doctorate in theology from the Jesuit Faculty in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He is the author of Knowing Jesus (London: SPCK 1992,8; Springfield: Templegate 1993); Raising Abel New York: Crossroad 1996 (The UK edition is called Living in the End Times SPCK 1998) The Joy of Being Wrong (Crossroad 1998); Faith beyond resentment (London: Darton Longman & Todd 2001; Crossroad 2001) On being liked (DLT 2003 and Crossroad 2004). Most recently Undergoing God has been published by DLT (London) and Continuum (New York).

July 14-18 Br. Michael Moran, CP: Windows to Heaven: An Icon Painting Retreat
Participants will be lead in the painting of an icon of the Mother of God. The daily schedule of the week will consist of two large blocks of time for painting, as well as "teachings" relevant to the spirituality of seeing and of icons. There will also be daily prayer, opportunties for discussion, as well as quiet time. No experience is necessary and art supplies will be provided. The goal is for each participant to have painted his/her own icon by the end of the retreat.
Michael Moran professed his vows in 1974 as a Brother of the Eastern Province of the Passionist Community in the USA. Since then he has spent much time and private study developing his artistic talents.
