• The official name of the
Paulist Fathers is the Missionary Society of
St. Paul the Apostle.
• There are currently 150 Paulist Fathers
who serve in 16 cities in the United States
and Canada as well as
Rome
and
Jerusalem.
• The
Paulist general office
is located in Jamaica Estates, New York.
• The Paulist Fathers were founded by Father
Isaac Thomas Hecker in New York City in 1858
after receiving a papal decree by Pope Pius
IX to form a new religious community.
• The Paulists are the first religious
congregation of men established in the
United States.
• Seventeen priests have served as superior
general or president of the Paulist Fathers.
• The current Paulist president is
Father John F. Duffy,
C.S.P.
• The Paulists gave their first mission in
Watertown, New York, in April 1858.
• The three main components to Paulist
ministry are:
Evangelization:
Preaching the Gospel to those who have not
heard its message of salvation.
Reconciliation:
Healing the wounds of brothers and sisters
alienated from the church community.
Ecumenism:
Searching for the unity of the church and
for kinship with world religions.
• The oldest living Paulist is Father Edward
J. McDonald, C.S.P., at age 93. Father
McDonald is also the longest serving
Paulist.
