Sacred Surveillance

Group Art Exhibition at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Manhattan
May 21st-June 20th, 2008

A group art exhibition exploring the concept Sacred Surveillance will be on display at the historic St. Paul the Apostle Church from May 21-June 30, 2008.

In Sacred Surveillance, each artist questions existence under the auspices of something greater: a quiet, conscious presence in one's daily movements or the artist in the role of flaneur, watching the world solemnly from a distance. The selected works discuss how this presence of the transcendent is disclosed through both the hidden and discursive elements of human experience. The exhibit responds to a variety of mediums including sculpture, painting, poetry and mixed media.

Participating artists: Katie Abpianalp, Robert Altchison, James Berroya, Aracell Cruz, LAuren Gohara, Imo Nse Imeh, Illyan Ivanov, Joey Kilrain, Susu Planchupattana, Susan Quilligan, John-Patrick Regalado, Laura Resheske, Frank Sabatte, Anthony Santella, Mareshah Yisral.

Artists' reception will take place on Wednesday, May 21 from 7-9 pm in the St. Paul the Apostle Church, W. 60th St. and 9th Ave. (Columbus).

For further information, please contact Frank Sabatte, CSP at 212.265.3209 ext 252, visit www.openingsny.com or artists@openingsny.com.

Hours: Daily 9am-5pm

About Openings

Openings is the Paulist Fathers ministry to young and emerging visual artists.

Mission Statement: Openings: Artists exploring the connection between their creativity and spirituality.

We believe that artists are moved by the Mystery of God to reveal more of it to each other and most of all to those who experience their art. In the words of Francis Bacon, "The job of the artist is to deepen the Mystery."

Openings is rooted in the Catholic experience of faith, a faith that relies on the experience of the God in whom we "live and move and have our being." We believe in the message of Jesus Christ that all persons are beloved of God without exception or conditions; that God's desire is to love us into fullness of Being.

Openings sponsors programs to fulfill its mission.

On Monday evenings from September to May at St. Paul the Apostle Church, W59th and Columbus Ave, young artists are welcome to the Openings Discussion. Topics include "art and making a difference"; relationships; identity and other issues of concern to artists. After the summer break the program will resume Monday evening, Sept. 10, 2007 at 7pm in the parish center.

Openings welcomes young visual artists 18-35 to join us.

SPECIAL REPORT from the exhibition Who, What, Why, When, Where and How is GOD?

Last June, St. Paul the Apostle Church in New York played host to an exhibition featuring what BustedHalo.com called "serious, gallery-worthy art that struggles to deal with essential questions."
