St. Augustine Parish - Memphis became a mission of the Paulist Fathers in September 2002. Its first Paulist pastor was Father John Geaney, CSP. Previous to the ministry of the Paulist Fathers, St. Augustine was under the direction of the Franciscan Friars of St. Louis. The premier African American parish in Memphis, St. Augustine is well known for its dedication to the African American culture in its liturgies, and its well known Gospel choir. The St. Augustine community of faith was founded in 1937. One of its more famous pastors was Father James Lyke, OFM, who eventually became the second African American Archbishop of Atlanta.
