Music Ministry at the Paulist Center
Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth; Break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
(Psalm 98:4)

Music as praise and petition to God is an essential component of our communal prayer at our liturgical celebrations.
As sacred song united to words,
music forms a necessary and integral
part of the solemn liturgy. Yet
the function of music is
ministerial; it must serve and
never dominate. Music should
assist the assembled believers to
express and share the gift of
faith that is within them and to
nourish and strengthen their
interior commitment of faith.
-Music in Catholic Worship, 23Ritual music expresses our greatest joys and laments, our thanksgivings and needs, and it gives voice to our journey as an intentional faith community striving to follow Jesus Christ. We strive to reflect the diversity of the world’s many cultures and styles while firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition.

Music is our sung prayer not only at our Sunday and vigil Eucharistic celebrations but also at penitential and reconciliation services, at morning and evening prayer, and at several special liturgies. Acclamations, litanies, chant, ostinatos, psalms, songs, and hymns reflect our diverse prayer at these liturgies.

The Paulist Center Pastoral Musician

The Paulist Center pastoral musicians are community members dedicated to leading music that fosters “full, conscious and active participation” of the assembly. Each member is part of a group responsible for one of the four weekend liturgies. Each group has different weekly rehearsals, and all musicians join together for seasonal rehearsals.
We encourage new members who sing or play an instrument to serve as a music minister at the Paulist Center by first contacting the Pastoral Minister of Liturgy and Music, Michael Kurley, at (617) 948-2425. You will be asked to participate in an informal “voice/instrument check” at your convenience.

Like any member of the assembly, the pastoral musician needs to hear the Gospel and so proclaim the praise of God. The pastoral musician is not merely an employee or volunteer. He or she is a minister, someone who shares faith, serves the community, and expresses love of God and neighbor through music.
